Boston is known for many things—cuisine, great universities, sporting arenas, and being a huge part of American History—but is affordable real estate one of them? Perhaps affordable real estate does not always make the Top Ten list, but this does not mean home ownership in Boston is necessarily out of reach.
As of this writing, Mattapan, Dorchester, Roslindale, and Hyde Park are thought to be the most affordable real estate areas of Boston. This is based on the average price per square foot of the home versus average home size. The ratio of price per square foot to home size becomes important when considering how large a home one needs and the ideal price point. For example, a home in Roslindale goes for $323 per square foot, but Roslindale did not have any homes on the Top Ten Most Affordable Homes List. Many of the homes on that list were in East Boston, which does not come to mind for many people who are looking for a reasonably-priced home.
The takeaway here? Owning a home in Boston is not necessarily a pipe dream. All it takes to find a reasonably-priced home in Boston is a good real estate agent, a little research, and an open-mind.
